Be prepared to review a number of candidates - if you don’t have a contractor you trust, make a list of referrals. Review at least five candidates. There are hundreds of publications that will tell you what to do next, however, this simple rule works best: Follow your gut AND then check their references. Things like previous work, their approach, their costing method, will be laid out plainly by the front-runners
Check the references - make absolutely sure by going out and looking at them. Yes, take some time off work and go out to a current site - even a layperson will have a gut feel for the professionalism just by seeing the job site
Check the process - “Well he looked like he knew what he was doing.... he wore work boots!”. Unfortunately for most residential construction projects, they are doomed from the outset because the process of translating client wants to actual production tasks is woefully unsophisticated. Doing this takes practice and experience. Most builders and remodelers are self-taught, not only in production but in the back office as well. This translates into the countless nightmares that most people recount after [or during] the construction project. Don’t skimp on this phase. Double check the process
An old expression cynically states you should believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. Here are some examples of our work for you to see while you’re considering SkyTop Builders
Don’t discount the tried and true “gut feel” during your evaluation either, even if you don’t know why. Little things like attitude and the condition of their work vehicles [for example, if their vehicles are run down and in poor condition]; these may be clues as to how they would run your project.
